Thesis Title: Methyl Bromide Degrading Marine Bacteria
About
I earned my PhD at the University of Warwick and Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK whilst working for Prof. J. Colin Murrell, Dr Ian McDonald, and Dr Phil Nightingale on methyl bromide-degrading marine bacteria. I extended my experience of microbial ecology with postdoctoral research at the University of Liverpool, UK, with Prof. Alan McCarthy and Prof. Clive Edwards, on the metagenomics of marine chitin and cellulose-degrading microorganisms. I moved to the US, joining the Lynch group at UCSF in 2008, to apply microbial ecology techniques such as 16S rRNA PhyloChip analysis to the study of microbial communities in the cystic fibrosis lung and other aspects of the human microbiome.
I returned to the UK in 2010 and have a fellowship in the Centre for Respiratory Infection, working with Prof Bill Cookson and Prof Miriam Moffat to investigate the respiratory microbiome. I'm particularly interested in how bacteria in communities interact with each other and with their environment.
I blog at http://palecomic.tumblr.com, frequently about science-related topics. RID: http://www.researcherid.com/rid/A-6959-2010
